As you brew coffee, residues and oils accumulate inside the brewing system, which is why it’s essential to clean it regularly using specialised cleaning products. Regular cleaning procedures result in better coffee flavour, as well as longer service life of your appliance.

HOW TO CLEAN A BEAN-TO-CUP COFFEE MACHINE?

Most bean-to-cup coffee machines are equipped with built-in cleaning programs. The steps involved may differ depending on the brand and model of your appliance. Refer to the user manual of your coffee machine.

HOW TO CLEAN AN ESPRESSO MACHINE?

1. If your coffee machine is equipped with a blind filter (designed specially for cleaning):

Backflushing procedure:

– Remove the portafilter and clean the internal edges of the brewing group with a brush.

– Take out the regular filter from the portafilter, then insert the blind filter (it’s supposed to have no holes in it).

– Put a cleaning tablet in the blind filter.

– Run the backflushing program. If there’s no such program in your appliance, you can perform it manually: start dispensing water, then let it run for 10 seconds. Turn the water off and wait for 10 seconds. Repeat 5–10 times.

– Remove the portafilter, then flush the brewing group by letting water run through it for a while. You can rinse the portafilter under the water too.

– Put the portafilter back in the group (with no tablet this time). Repeat the rinsing and pausing cycle 5 more times to ensure that your coffee machine has been flushed properly.

– Once you’re done, brew a serving of espresso, then pour it out. The second serving is guaranteed to be fit for drinking.

Thorough cleaning of the filters and portafilter:

– Pour warm water into your chosen container, then dissolve one cleaning tablet in it.

– Immerse the portafilter (up to the handle) and filters (they must be removed from the portafilter) in the cleaning solution. Removing the shower screen to soak it in the solution is recommended too. Leave for 30 minutes.

– Scrub the filters and portafilter off with a sponge, then rinse well.

2. If your coffee machine isn’t equipped with a blind filter:

Clean the filters and portafilter regularly instead.

HOW TO CLEAN A FILTER COFFEE MACHINE?

Pour water into the coffee jug, then dissolve a cleaning tablet in it. Leave for a couple of hours. Pour the water out and rinse the jug thoroughly afterwards.
